This summer, the National Federation of the Blind of Pennsylvania is thrilled to announce a groundbreaking opportunity for young learners: a Summer Braille Reading Program designed to bridge the gap and prevent the summer slide in Braille literacy skills. With a focus on rejuvenating and enhancing Braille reading abilities, this program is a beacon of hope and advancement for beginner to mid-level Braille readers aged 12 and older.
The Summer Slide: A Challenge to Overcome
Research consistently shows that students tend to experience a regression in academic skills over the summer months when they are not engaged in structured learning activities. This phenomenon, known as the “summer slide,” is particularly pronounced among blind students in their proficiency with Braille. Just as sighted students may struggle with maintaining their reading levels without regular practice, blind students face similar challenges with Braille. The Summer Braille Reading Program is our answer to this challenge, aiming to ensure that students maintain and enhance their Braille reading skills over the summer.
Program Overview
Scheduled to run for five weeks, with sessions held every Wednesday from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, the program offers an intensive yet engaging curriculum designed to ramp up Braille reading skills. The dates are July 17, July 24, July 31, August 7, and August 14, 2024, with an introductory class meeting on July 14 to allow students and teachers to connect and set the stage for a summer of learning.
Curriculum and Materials
Participants will explore and engage with various materials, including Five Kernal Book stories, specially embossed and bound for this program, alongside a copy of the currently used UEB contractions. This curriculum is carefully crafted to reinforce existing skills and introduce new concepts, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience.
Accessibility and Inclusion
Understanding the importance of accessibility, the program will be hosted on the Zoom platform, allowing students from across Pennsylvania to participate in this enriching experience from the comfort of their homes. With a limit of 10 students, we aim to provide a focused, personalized learning environment supported by our dedicated staff.
Investment in the Future
The program costs $150.00 for each two-hour session, with an additional one-time fee of $300.00 covering the production and mailing of materials. This investment in your child’s education is an invaluable step towards ensuring they return to school with confidence in their Braille reading abilities, ready to tackle the challenges of the new academic year.
